Systems Exam in Operating Systems

Date/Place

The exam date will be Monday June 23 at 10am-1pm in a room TBA.

Content

The Computer Systems Exam is a syllabus-based exam. The exam will consist of 75%-80% basic material (what all computer science students should know from taking an undergraduate course) and 20%-25% advanced material on the topic.

This June's version of the systems exam will consist of entirely new questions. We do not plan to reuse any old questions. Also, as in previous exams, we will not be distributing old versions of the exams.

Grading

The grading will work as follows: The grading will be done blindly by two or more faculty members. A numeric score will be determined that will be assigned to each students exams. The committee will meet to determine the disposition of the numeric scores and the relationship of the numeric scores to the following qualitative criteria: Failure, Master's Pass (MP), and Phd Pass.

Cheating

Any form of cheating during the exam will be dealt with severely and will lead to an immediate failure of the exam. Students will be turned over the office of student conduct for disciplinary action.

SYLLABUS FOR OPERATING SYSTEMS SECTION OF THE COMPUTER SYSTEMS EXAM

Students are expected to have a mastery of the material presented in the first 12 chapters of Silbershatz and Galvin's text. You may prefer to read Stallings since this had been the book of choice for teaching the graduate OS course and this textbook (or one of many others) may also be used to study the germane topics. Click here for topics covered in Silbershatz and Galvin's first 12 chapters.

This year we have attached a reading list for the advanced material. The bibliography provides original papers to review for your studies.
